  1. Event: Lecture by Dr. Sylvia Earle
In my discover Biology class, we were to read The World Is Blue by Dr. Sylvia Earle. The book described the impact we were having on the marine environment and what in meant for our future. From whaling and extinction of species to the Exon oil spills and trash in the water, she went into great detail about our negative effects we have on the oceans. This book was truly and eye opener for me and then to go to a lecture by her was an amazing privilege. During her lecture she gave background on herself as a marine biologist and then led into her research on ocean life. See talked more about different aspects in her book and what we should do to start helping the ocean life such as aquiculture and chose our fish more wisely. She stressed that one of the biggest things we can do is just to start informing people and hopefully we will all be able to make changes in time to save our oceans.

  2. Event: Farmers' Market
Two weeks ago I went to the famers Market for the first time. It was amazing everything they had there and all of the different types of food and plants for sale. I can barely keep a plant alive much rather grow edible produce that these people have. It was hard not to buy everything once they gave you a sample but I did buy honey crisp apples, which were probably the best apples I have ever had. Buy locally means a lot to because you are supporting the community you live in and the food is so much healthier and natural. I have been to the farmers market in Wisconsin and Kentucky before and I would have to say that they are very different from the one here. The one in Winter Park seems to focus more on baked goods and plants. Granted there are things such as fruit and vegetable stands but not to the extent as the others. The culture between the different markets was very different.

  3. Event: Farmer's market
I have been to the farmer's market a few times and each time I have found something new. I love the diversity because I could spend all my time in one section of the market each time I go. I live in Fort Lauderdale, and there are no farmer's markets there, so it was a nice change to see some local produce in Florida. I like how there is an indoors section as well along with a BBQ station outside. I have grown to appreciate local produce more and I am telling my mom to use more of it in her cooking.

  4. Event: Lecture with Sylvia Earle
For this lecture I had to write a reflection paper on Sylvia Earle and her outlook on the world with her book, "World is Blue." I thought her presentation was very informative and I was amazed at all the places she has been. I feel like she is really making her life about solving the mysteries and problems of the world, and her goal in life is to make it better for the generations to come. She told me some facts that I didn't know about the ocean, and opened my eyes to new problems that I wasn't even aware of. I read her book in class, and I thought it was well written because it was not just plain facts, she had some stories of her adventures in there. I think her book was a great thing, and to see her in person was a special occasion and it made me want to become more aware of the things happening to our world and I learned ways that we can change to help our deteriorating world.

  5. Event: Farmer’s Market
I have gone to the farmers market a couple times since I’ve been at school. I had never been to any kind of market before so it was interesting to see how it functions. The market functions through sustainable production in the community where the goods are sold with great quality for the pleasure of the people. I had no idea how many different kinds of products were sold at a market. The flowers were gorgeous! They came in all different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. They were also arranged in such a fashion that looks so artistic. Even if you don’t buy anything, just walking through and smelling everything the market has to offer is amazing.

  6. Event:Basketball game vs Warner
The basketball game Friday night vs warner was the first game i have been to this year. we started well and lead pretty much the whole time and ended up winning 66-51. i think we should have won by more because of how much bigger we were then the other team but maybe it is because it is early in the season. the atmosphere at the game was better then i expected also. the student section was relentless and ridiculed the other team the whole night. i wouldn't want to play at a place with obnoxious fans at all. i was glad that we won not just because i am a Tar, but because my friend goes to Warner and i got to boast to him about the victory. he was not amused. i'm sure i'll be going to a lot of games and was impressed by the talent that our school has since we are so small. looking forward to a long run in the playoffs.

  7. Event: Farmers Market
The farmers market is a great way to get a sense of the community in winter park. I have been to the farmers market in chicago multiple times but the one in winter park is different because the scenery and people are so different from chicago. I love the farmers market because there are so many different foods and flowers. When walking through the market you can smell the combination of the food and plants and just enjoy the people. I have been to many different farmers markets but i don't think i have ever bought anything because i just enjoy going to observe the community.

  8. Event: Lecture by Dr. Sylvia Earle
In the Discover Biology class we were all required to go to Dr. Earle’s lecture when she visited Rollins. This was right after we had all finished reading The World Is Blue, a book about how people’s actions or the things they have not been doing affect the oceans of the world. It also explained how important aquatic life is to people’s well being, and how most people do not realize that. Her lecture was very interesting and brought up some new points but she also restated some of the things she had written about. But she had a slide show of pictures to go along with what she was repeating, so it made the concepts we had all already read about a little more interesting. She mentioned that people were “Marsiphying” the Earth, and that was something she had not mentioned in her book. She was very optimistic and hoped that we would educate others to create change in the world.

  9. Event: Lecture by Dr. Sylvia Earle
For my Discover Biology class we read a book written by Dr. Sylvia Earle called "The World is Blue". This book was all about bringing about awareness concerning how quickly we are destroying the ocean and its inhabitants that dwell within. Dr. Sylvia Earle is extremely passionate about the ocean and preached that we are running out of time to reverse the damage we have done... BUT if we all act now, there may still be hope. Damages we have inflicted on the ocean include the dramatic oil spill, trash, and fishing in abundance. There is a sense of urgency when it comes to trying to preserve the blue wonder we call ocean, because this natural living system is quickly becoming desolate and destroyed. I found her lecture extremely interesting to listen to, and it was a true eye opener. She accompanied her lecture with a slide show displaying images of poor marine life covered in oil...chopped up in fish markets.... and caught up in debris we have littered about. I am extremely passionate about animals, in fact I am a bio major following the pre-vet track. Animals are my forte and hearing about the harm we are inflicting upon them really got to me.

  10. Event: Farmers market
I have lived in the Winter Park region all of my life, yet before this school year I had only been to the farmers market once or twice. Within this first semester I have been two times already! Upon returning to the farmers market i was curious as to why I had not gone to the farmers market more often! My absolute favorite part is the tortilla chip stand where you try the multitudes of salsa. I love salsa and the variety of flavors and spiciness were glorious ! I also love the variety of flowers at the farmers market. There are so eye popping and smell amazing. I also adore the abundance of dogs that are brought along by there owners. I make it my goal to pet every dog possible while I am there. I have never personally bought anything at the farmers market, although I have been tempted to buy the pineapple every time I have attended.

  11. At the beginning of the year I went to the Art gallery on campus. I loved going there because it was really nice to escape from being in a new place and just enjoy something I was comfortable with already. I was very surprised when I first walked in at the quality of the art. I actually felt like I was in a real art gallery. I loved the pictures of Andy Warhol because of how different they were and how iconic he is. I would have to say though that my favorite artwork was one of the moon over the ocean and the way that it was lit up really looked like the moon was giving off its own light. I haven’t been back yet but I would love to go again and see if I look at any of it differently after have being in Drawing the Landscape.

  12. A couple weeks ago I woke up a bit earlier than usual for the weekend to go to the Farmer's Market. It was my second time going, since I had been one of the first weekends I came to Winter Park. I love going because it reminds me that I do live in an actual town, not just a college. I love seeing all the fresh fruits and vegetables, crafts, and wonderful food! The first time I had gone I had gotten an orchid for my room. The second time I went I ended up getting a fresh baked loaf of bread for the week. I loved having actual food in my dorm, I think it's going to become a routine for me now. It was great to see what the local community is like, and so see actual dogs! Everyone brings their dog there when they go. It was a fun time and I'm sure I will go again.

  13. In the beginning of this semester, I went to the Cornell Fine Art Museum exhibit: "It's Always Rock and Roll: The Work of Photojournalist Janet Macoska". It was free to enter because I was a Rollins student. When I walked into the gallery, I noticed that there were so many photos taken during Macoska's carreer, and of so many famous musicians and artists. There were many photos of Andy Warhol, the Factory, and the people there, the Rolling Stones, Kiss, Nico, and many more. There were all black and white. Some were taken on the stage during the musician's performances, others more intimate and showed what their life was like behind the curtain. I enjoyed the exhibit, and I will definitely be going back for future exhibitions.

  14. Event: Lecture by Dr. Sylvia Earle
For my Discover Biology class I was supposed to go to Sylvia Earle’s lecture about “The World Is Blue”. I found it really interesting because I am very interested in marine biology. She was different than I expected but in a good way. I wasn’t expecting her to be as interesting and I thought it might be kind of confusing to listen to someone that is so involved in that field. Since I’m still learning about all of it I thought I might be kind of lost but I wasn’t at all. I learned a lot that I didn’t know even from reading the book. After hearing her lecture I became really inspired to make a difference, even if it was a small one. I decided I would recycle everything and that I would try not to use as much water. I think that Sylvia has made a huge difference and without her our world would be in trouble.

  15. Event: Farmer’s Market
I really enjoyed the Farmer’s Market. It was really nice to see the different aspects of the community. I was surprised to see that there were more than just food products there. For some reason I thought of a “Farmer’s Market” as corn, potatoes, tomatoes and things like that. The flowers they had there were really pretty. It was cool to see the native flowers of Florida. Since I’m from Illinois I hadn’t seen a lot of them before. It was really cool that they let you taste everything. Normally they just have stands where you pick up the food and pay for it. I think that they get people a lot more involved than other markets I’ve seen. The part I like most about it is that you can actually meet the people you are buying from. When you have the chance to see who its coming from it makes you feel more assured that you should be giving money to this person and makes you feel better that you are seeing it help someone.

  16. Event: Heyd Fontenot Lecture
Last night I attended the lecture by artist, Heyd Fontenot. It was my first real art lecture and I found it really interesting. He has a very unique way of drawing people. I like how he defines the people’s heads more than he does their body. He draws their faces so well that it almost looks like the head is a real life picture that was just pasted on a drawn body. I found it interesting that he almost always seemed to make the head bigger than it should be which made it seem like the head didn’t go with the body. I also noticed that in most of his figures he had a thick contour line around the entire body. It was like he drew the whole body in one step and then went back in to do the detail. It was interesting to see an artist that pretty much only paints naked people. I haven’t seen very many artists that do that especially in the way he does.

  17. Event: Heyd Fontenot Lecture
The lecture i attended the other night portrayed interesting paintings unlike any i had seen before. The artist had multiple drawings all of people and occasionally the incorporation of animals. His way of drawing the people was very unique and caught my attention. He decided to portray the people by making their proportions unlike humans real proportions. He made the peoples heads bigger than they actually were but kept the bodies their normal size. He explained that he did this because it made the drawings stand out more. All the drawings were of nude people in a variety of positions and occasionally with other people. The only clothing involved was a bra and underwear, but only in a few paintings. I have never been exposed to an artist that draws in a way similar to his.

  18. Event: Farmer’s Market
When I lived in Upstate New York 6 years ago, my family and I would always go to the farmer’s market in our town to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and handmade items. That was probably my favorite thing to do on the weekends. So when I found out Winter Park had a farmer’s market I wanted to check it out with my family to see if it was the same! We have two different farmer’s markets in the area where I live but they were not anything like the one in New York so I was hoping the one in Winter Park would be different and more like the one I was used to. There were many baked goods in the Winter Park farmer’s market, which was different than the one in New York because it was focused more on fruits and vegetables. It was still an enjoyable experience even though it was not the same as I’m used to.

  19. Cornell Fine Arts Museum
I’ve been to the museum probably four times this year for various reasons. I like the layout of the museum and most of the art that has been displayed so far. I was able to walk around and see everything before I decided my favorite work of art was Oddball Objects by Jane Hammond, which is a mixed media collage. It has brilliant colors and almost too much in it to comprehend. I also like the room with the giant watercolor paintings. They have a children’s novel feel to them and I especially liked how the artist incorporated dogs into each work. I didn’t understand why he left them looking unfinished and empty in a lot of the spaces but still I enjoyed them. One piece that lost me was the giant wood structure in the back room of the faculty art. I’m sure there is meaning in there somewhere, or maybe it’s simply meant to take up space and look pretty, who knows.

  20. Event: Farmers Market
The Farmers Market has to be one of my favorite things about Winter Park. It continues to show me the type of community that it is. It was nice to walk around and see all that it had to offer. The people were so nice and no one made you feel obligated to buy any of their stuff. I ended up buying the kettle corn, which you can smell from anywhere in the farmers market, and a few fruits. everything was so fresh and I instantly felt right at home with the amazing community and family that they have.
